Synthetic slings are lifting slings made from a synthetic material, such as nylon or polyester. Sometimes also referred to as synthetic rigging slings or synthetic lifting straps, these types of slings is lightweight and flexible and covered with a protective jacket. This rugged woven fabric sleeve not only protects the sling’s fibers, it adds a layer of protection to items being lifted.
A sling is a lifting device made of soft materials which is fixed with a metallic chain, cable or webbing sling between a lifting device and the load to be lifted. The slinging includes all the operations of linking devices which are manufactured with metallic components such as hooks, rings, shackles, and chain links adhered to the attached load.
Web slings, are versatile in nature. These are known to provide a strong support to lift a load, ensuring no damage in the lifting process. The primary material used in the polyester is sewn into continuous length with an eye attached at both the ends. Low stretch characteristics of the polyester helps in avoiding any load bounce with the heavy weight.

Slings are an important part of rigging as almost all lifts require a flexible temporary link to transmit the loads from the object being lifted to the lifting device or crane. Shipyards typically use slings made from chain, wire rope, or synthetic materials. Of these materials, wire rope and synthetic slings are the most common for the large lifts in shipyards, with high performance synthetics increasingly becoming the dominantly used material.
Round slings are manufactured in the UK in single endless form in a standard range of WLL up to 12t, although the WLL is theoretically not restricted. Although common in Europe, multi-leg roundsling assemblies are rare in the UK and users prefer to obtain single endless slings. This enables a varied range of uses, including the assembly of more than one sling in any particular slinging arrangement.
